This past summer I spent 2 nights on a houseboat in the middle of the Everglades. Early one morning while I went for a walk, I almost stumbled over an 8 foot American crocodile!
The Florida Everglades are host to some remarkable flora and fauna. Consider the manchineel tree, a tree so toxic one could go blind if sheltering beneath it during a rainstorm. Or the gorgeous American crocodile, who lives by the roots of the mangroves. Unlike its Nile relative, these graceful beasts are actually kind of timid around people. Even so, I didn't get too close.
I honor the creatures of the Everglades with a touch of dark humor. "May the strongest survive!" the skulls, crocodiles and vultures laugh in unison.
